Notes: Sarah Bernhardt Plays Hamlet
‘Alas Poor Yorick.’

This portrait shows Sarah in the title role of Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’.  She is about to deliver the ‘Alas poor Yorick’ soliloquy which is the best known and most often miss-quoted.  She played this role in 1899 to a Parisian audience.  She was the first actress to play the male lead which became her most controversial role.  19th century audiences were not quite ready for women dressed as men
