October

The landscape, quiet and beautiful seems to revive the sublime emotions associated with nature and with myths and histories. The elements: the houses, the church, the boat waiting on the sea shore, the road, the vegetation and the evening sky are fraught with emotions that are deep into the cultural psyche of the islanders. It is a quaint landscape where the colours of the sky give an insight into a consciousness that is truly romantic. The use of fading light of the sunset is in start contrast to the darkness and the shadows. This allusive mystifying aspect has a narrative power of its own. It seems to tell a story in the language of the objects in the landscape both present and absent. The boat without the boatman; the solitary church almost desolated; the houses unlit; and the rocks and the road carry a deep sense of despair and hope. The October landscape with its sense of loss and emptiness seems to reveal the “unconsciousness suffering” of the artist which in itself is an enduring quality of noble art.
